Comparison of Finite Element and Monte Carlo Simulations for Inhomogeneous Advanced Breast Cancer Imaging
نویسندگان
چکیده
Tumor vascular patterns of advanced breast cancers are complex and heterogeneous. Near infrared (NIR) optical tomography has great potential to image tumor vascular and hypoxia patterns. The simulation of NIR diffusion in turbid tissue is indispensable to accelerate the practice in clinic. In this article, the two popular simulation methods, Finite element (FEM) and Monte Carlo (MC), are compared towards running time, reconstruction results and accuracy ratio. Three-dimensional FEM method provided by Comsol is used to model an inhomogeneous advanced breast tumor of different optical properties for outer layer and inner core in a semi-infinite medium. The MC simulation developed by standard C modeled the same condition using 30 million photons. The phantom experiment in similar condition using ultrasound-guided NIR imaging system is also performed to verify the simulations.

A comparison of arrived dose to the heart in the treatment of breast cancer in different modes of proton radiation by proton therapy using Monte Carlo simulation
Introdution: Today, the Advantages of radiation therapy by charged particles is indicated for the treatment of cancerous. During the passing of proton beam in the body tissues, secondary particles produce, which penetrate to the body healthy tissues and cause damage. The aim of this research was calculating the Spread out Bragg Peak for covering the breast cancer and investigating arrived dose ...

Background: The aim of this study was to develop and implement a Monte Carlo framework for evaluation of patient specific out-of-field organ equivalent dose (OED). Materials and Methods: Dose calculations were performed using a Monte Carlo-based model of Oncor linac and tomographic phantoms. Monte Carlo simulations were performed using EGSnrc user codes. Dose measurements were performed using r...
متن کاملDosimetric comparison between four kinds of radioactive esophageal stents to be used in the treatment of advanced esophageal cancers using Monte Carlo simulation
Finding accurate methods to be employed for the treatment of esophageal cancers is of especial interest for researchers, due to the sensitivity of this tissue. Recently radioactive stents loaded with I-125 brachytherapy seeds have been widely investigated for the treatment of advanced esophageal cancer. It is necessary to investigate the dose distribution of any radioactive esophageal stents be...
متن کاملEvaluation of the dose and flux of secondary particles in the lung tissue in breast proton therapy using the Monte Carlo simulation code
Unlike proton therapy, conventional radiation therapy directs X-rays not only at the tumor but also unavoidably at nearby healthy tissue. Protons deliver radiation to tumor tissue while the healthy structures will be spared during proton therapy. When protons travel through matter, secondary particles like neutrons and photons are produced. It is believed that the secondary dose can lead to sec...
متن کاملPlanar and SPECT Monte Carlo acceleration using a variance reduction technique in I131 imaging
Background: Various variance reduction techniques such as forced detection (FD) have been implemented in Monte Carlo (MC) simulation of nuclear medicine in an effort to decrease the simulation time while keeping accuracy. However most of these techniques still result in very long MC simulation times for being implemented into routine use. Materials and Methods: Convolution-based force...
